(no dust jacket) [solid binding, not especially shelfworn, but with quite a bit of external soiling to covers and page edges, foxing to frontispiece and title page]. (frontispiece photo) INSCRIBED generically ("Very truly yrs") and SIGNED by the author on the second ffep. Short stories (some just a page in length), "nearly all of which came from Uncle Jake's lips," and are hoped by the author (a white lady, as her frontispiece portrait photo tells us) "to show the real kindly feeling existing between the people of the South and the better class of the negroes." She goes on to tell us that Uncle Jake, apparently a favored servant on her family's plantation, "took great pride in never having belonged to, or worked for, 'poor white folks,' and the blue blood of his Marster's family was a source of as much pride to him as the fact that all the horses on the plantation were thoroughbreds." (Because divining the innermost thoughts and feelings of one's faithful slaves is just the easiest thing now, isn't it? Yassuh, Marse Andy.)
