(no dust jacket) [well-worn copy, rear hinge cracked; should be considered a reading copy only]. "The theory that the female is the dominating, superior sex is not novel, but Bourdet treats it in a novel way. His characters in [this play] are members of the international plutocracy whose favorite playground is Paris. There is a dominant mother; her weak-willing, charming sons for whom she engineers 'fortunate' marriages; a daughter who manages an ultra-smart dress shop with masculine efficiency; their respective husbands, wives, mistresses and lovers." A film adaptation was produced in France in 1933, under the title "Le sexe faible" (aka "Weaker Sex"), under the direction of Robert Siodmak, who spent most of the 1930s in Paris after getting out of Germany when the Nazis took power; he eventually made his way to Hollywood in 1939.
