(large-format paperback) [minor wear at edges and corners, a few surface scrapes and short finger-creases]. Trade PB (B&W photographs) Not so much a history per se as a collection of about 70 essays and articles on major groups, individuals, movements or trends. Many of these are brilliant, almost definitive pieces of rock criticism, and the list of contributors is stellar: Robert Palmer, Peter Guralnick, Robert Christgau, Nik Cohn, Greil Marcus, Lester Bangs, Dave Marsh, Jim Miller, Joe McEwen, Ed Ward, etc. All the people you'd expect are included in the biographical pieces (all of which include discographies, by the way), but just as much interest lies in the general pieces, among them: "The Sound of New Orleans"; "Rockabilly"; "Doo-Wop"; "Brill Building Pop"; "Italo-American Rock"; "The Sound of Chicago"; "The Sound of Memphis"; "Motown"; "Heavy Metal"; "The Sound of Philadelphia"; "Art Rock"; "Jazz Rock"; "Rock Films"; etc. And the photos, of course, are fantastic. (Subsequent editions of this book adopted a smaller format, so for browsing-through purposes, you'll still want to have this one.)
