[light wear to extremities, slight deterioration of cloth at top of spine; jacket very browned at spine, minor paper loss at spine ends, a couple of other tiny nicks and tears]. INSCRIBED and SIGNED by the author on the ffep: "For Frank, in / appreciation of a friendship / which means much to me / Lucien Hubbard / April 30, 1942." "Unashamed and unrepentant, [this novel] primarily tells a tale -- a tale of the Mississippi-Ohio rivers, with suspense, climaxes, and even such unfamiliar things as a hero and a villain. Frankly fictional, it is rooted deeply in American history." Set in 1811, it involves an adventurous journey downriver from Pittsburgh to New Orleans, where "the love story of the young hero at the two girls in his life reaches a surprising conclusion." Hubbard had been in the movie business since the late 1910s, transitioning from writer to producer along the way (his most famous credit, then and now, was as the producer of WINGS in 1927, although he had dozens of other credits), but by the time this novel (his first and only) appeared he was winding down his film career. Given his background and the circumstances, however, one can't help but wonder if this yarn, "based on the life of Nicholas Roosevelt and his first steamboat to puff down the Mississippi River," might have begun its life as a film project he couldn't get off the ground. In any event, it's pretty scarce. Signed by Author
