[light shelfwear, rear hinge a little weak, mild age-toning to top edge of text block, small bookseller's stamp (Bertrand Smith's Acres of Books, Long Beach) on front pastedown; jacket is edgeworn with a few tiny nicks, visible wear at spine extremities, shallow chip at top of front panel near spine]. Novel tracing the long life of sacrifice endured by a Baptist minister. He starts his career in a small rural community "whose inhabitants are as strange in their actions as they are in appearance and speech," and in which his tenure seems to consist largely of dealing with scandal, violence, madness and death (you know, typical small-town stuff). After twelve years, he moves on to another assignment, and in THAT town the main thing that seems to be going on is his son's coming under the romantic/sexual influence of a woman twenty years his senior; later, he goes off for some missionary duty in China and other foreign lands, finally returning home for a well-deserved retirement, only to witness, "this time in the circle of his immediate family, one more scene of madness and murder, marking a fitting finale to the sordid intrigues, the heartbreaks and the misery, that too often come with the acquisition of great wealth." (That last bit is a reference to his son, who's become a wealthy man in the interim, not the poor preacher-man himself.) This was apparently the only published novel by Garett Holmes (a woman, by the way), although the rear jacket blurb stated that she was "already at work on a sequel," which frankly is a little hard to imagine, given that (spoiler alert!) by the end of this book most of the interesting characters are dead.
